Try and communicate something of value with every post: Advice, insight, a story, an interesting fact. Does it take work to put together such posts on a regular basis? Definitely. But the effort will be noticed.
Don't get too hung up on the bells and whistles of social media -- the animated GIFs, emojis, contests, etc. A good story resonates better than all of that.
Can you reach more people on Facebook by putting money behind your post? Yes. But that does not mean they will interact with it. It still has to be quality content. I have seen promoted posts be ignored just as easily as posts that don't have a monetary push. - Cris
